Tensions Rising- The Duality of Copyright Law

As tensions begin to rise in response to the restrictive nature of the Sony Bono Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA), Lawrence Lessig, Hal Abelson, and Eric Eldred offer an copyleft/ alternative solution to copyright law, Creative Commons (CC). As the successor of the 1998 Open Content Project, CC/s main objectives are:

  1. To offer licenses that foster creative freedom while guaranteeing intellectual property rights
  2. To remove the obstacles of rigid copyright enforcement
  3. To promote creator attribution that is centered around the reuse and open sharing of creative content.

As such, in 2002 CC begins to offer copyright licenses that allow creators to specify how others can use their work, aiming to balance creators’ rights with the desire for open sharing, access, and the reuse of creative content.
